Professor Packham joined the University of Southampton in 2000 and was awarded his readership in 2004. He heads the Apoptosis Research Group, based in the Cancer Research UK funded unit at Southampton General Hospital, which is focused on gene regulation and survival pathways in malignant cells. After securing a First in Biochemistry (University of Leeds) and a PhD (University of London), Graham completed post-doctoral studies at St Jude Children's Hospital (Memphis, USA) where he was recipient of the Martin Morrison Fellowship. In 1995, Graham joined the Ludwig Institute to establish an independent research group with the aim of investigating apoptosis in cancer cells.
